About Salon du Chocolat
Salon du Chocolate opened in The Hague, Netherlands in August 2003, providing the highest quality chocolate products to the international community in The Hague. It represents more than bon-bons, crème fraiche, and hand-made chocolates, as it serves as a haven for chocolate lovers and weary visitors. The shopfront is on the Noordeinde, a charming upscale shopping street in the old city 'Centrum', an area known for art galleries, restaurants, and specialty shops.
The shop showcases its artisanal chocolates on a
circa-1900 jugendstil shopcounter with
its original one-piece 3.6m white marble counter
top. It was found in Gent, having been long retired from shop service,
and was gently brought back to condition. The shop is inviting,
comfortable, and to use a unique Dutch expression 'gezellig'.
The real stars of Salon du Chocolate are,
naturally, the chocolates. During the last several years a few of the
larger Belgian specialty chocolate makers opened and closed shops in The Hague,
often without fully understanding the community and its tastes. After the
departure of Godiva and Neuhaus, a
long-time employee and manager for one of these shops and lifelong resident, José
Mos,
decided to open her own shop and provide her customers fine chocolates,
attentive service, a patient ear, quality packing and wrapping, and an
inviting place to visit.
Besides relying on her own fine taste, José enlisted her close friends in the challenging task of helping to select the best chocolates. This of course involved trips through The Netherlands and to neighboring countries, and consumption of sometimes excessive amounts of chocolates. The potential suppliers were narrowed to two specialized chocolate makers, the award-winning Chocolatier Manon in Brussels, and the creative new chocolate maker Chocolatier Van Dam from The Netherlands. These makers have contrasting and complementary styles, but both share an abiding love for quality and taste. Also available at Salon du Chocolate are liqueurs made by a small Netherlands distiller, Zuidam, books, and gift packages.
We invite you to visit our little shop (directions), or to refer your friends who may be coming to Holland. The shop is situated on the north end of the Noordeinde. About 100m (110 yards) north is the Panorama Mesdag (www.panorama-mesdag.com) a museum with an amazing 360-degree painting of the local beach community of Scheveningen. This work as completed in 1881 by Hendrik Willem Mesdag (www.mesdag.com) and his colleagues. This is one of the most popular destinations in The Hague, as is the Prince's Palace and rear gardens that lie 100m to the south.
